GREENVILLE, N.C. (May 12, 2011) – Associates from local lift truck manufacturer NACCO Materials Handling Group, Inc. (NMHG) teamed with members from United Way of Pitt County yesterday to build and give away bicycles for five deserving local children.
Due to the enormous response of NMHG employees that wanted to help build the bikes, the NMHG Finance & Accounting group decided to create a team-building exercise around the giveaway. Twenty-two (22) financial associates from NMHG’s Greenville; Sulligent, Ala.; Berea, Ky.; Brazil; Mexico and Scotland facilities were divided into five groups and competed for tools and parts needed to build their respective bicycles. The bike building event, which was facilitated by East Carolina University’s (ECU) Leadership & Teambuilding Specialists, took place in the ECU Student Recreation Center on campus.
The five bikes that were built were BMX-style MIRRACO bikes. The five children, three boys and two girls aged seven and eight, were selected by United Way of Pitt County.
The children were also given safety helmets and locks for their new bicycles.
“We had such an overwhelming number of our associates come to us wanting to do something that we decided to create a team building exercise around the donation,” said Jonathan Dawley, VP of marketing, NMHG. “NMHG chose to become a part of this community 35 years ago due to the kindness and generosity of this community. We are proud to bring smiles to young faces.”
“United Way of Pitt County is happy to again partner with one of our community’s greatest supporters, NACCO Materials Handling Group, Inc.,” said Reneé A. Blount, interim executive director. “In our latest joint venture we were able to assist them in identifying five deserving children as recipients of custom built bicycles. NMHG took their leadership process to another level by using that training tool to not only develop their staff, but to enrich the lives of these Pitt County children. We are always happy to partner with companies like NMHG who make a difference in our community.”
