    Alternative Power Solutions

There is an abundance of power solutions available for lift trucks. In the past, gas, LP, diesel and lead-acid battery were the prevalent options. Today’s newer technologies offer significant benefits. But sorting through the challenges and opportunities each option provides can be difficult. And not all are applicable for every operation. At Hyster, we start by evaluating the needs of a specific material handling operation and the demands that will be placed on the trucks — performance, operation cycle, lift capacity and more — before recommending a lift truck and power source solution.

    Hydrogen fuel cell technology

Fuel cells are quickly becoming a popular alternative power source for lift trucks. Hyster offers fuel cell technology, which electrochemically mixes hydrogen with oxygen to generate the power. The only byproduct of this process is water, making this technology one of the most efficient eco-friendly power alternatives.

    Lithium-ion battery power

The technology is spreading rapidly, and the cost of shifting to Lithium-ion, from internal combustion engines (ICE) or lead-acid, has come down considerably. The advantages include improved efficiency, zero maintenance, full power delivery, fast charging and longer life.

    Full power all the time

ICE trucks deliver consistent power whether the tank is full or nearing empty. Not so with older electric power solutions. Lithium-ion and fuel cell solutions from Hyster deliver the same consistent end-to-end power—but with the added benefit of zero emissions.

    Reduced maintenance

Lithium-ion trucks can help cut down on maintenance costs compared to an ICE. These trucks have fewer moving parts, which means fewer parts that need to be maintained or replaced. Lithium-ion batteries also require zero maintenance compared to older battery technologies. They don’t need watering, aren’t subject to gassing and have a longer life span. All of which can save you money.

    Less downtime

Thanks to fast refueling and recharging, fuel cell and Lithium-ion solutions will keep your fleet moving and productive. Fuel cell refueling can be completed in as quick as three minutes. Lithium-ion batteries are easier to swap and can be opportunity charged without affecting battery “memory.” It all adds up to more shift hours spent getting the job done.

    Reduced footprint

One of the factors often overlooked is the space that must be dedicated to battery storage and maintenance when it comes to older electric technologies. A Lithium-ion solution from Hyster requires a smaller footprintthan previous-generation technologies so you can reclaim valuable square footage and put it back to work for your operation.
