POWERED INDUSTRIAL TRUCK (PIT) ELECTRIFICATION

THE GROWING PIT ELECTRIFICATION IMPERATIVE

REGULATORY COMPLIANCE

Reducing your business’s impact on the environment is becoming less of a choice and more of a mandate. Federal and state governments are pledging new decarbonization commitments to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by transitioning a greater share of energy consumption from fossil fuels to renewable sources.

  • Brazil aims to reduce GHG emissions between 59% and 67% by 2035 compared to 2005 levels. Part of this initiative involves progressively replacing fossil fuels with electrification in the industrial sector.
  • Chile has set a 100% zero-emissions target for large mobile machinery (>560 kilowatts) by 2035, and for smaller equipment (>19 kW) – including forklifts – by 2040.
  • Mexico’s General Law on Climate Change includes a national mobility strategy that promotes the transition from fossil fuel-powered vehicles to electric alternatives across various sectors, including industrial applications.
GREEN CORPORATE INITIATIVES

Companies are increasingly setting their own sustainability initiatives and decarbonization  timelines and are placing a heavy emphasis on supply chains, which often account for more than 90% of an organization’s emissions.

According to the 2023 MHI annual industry report:

  • Nearly half of supply chain professionals say they face increased influences to adopt a more sustainable supply chain, with pressure coming from consumers, regulators, industry groups, traditional and social media and other stakeholders
  • Electrification is the single greatest area of focus, with 40% of supply chain professionals identifying it as their top priority
HEALTH AND SAFETY

Workplace safety and the protection of employee wellbeing is critical for all organizations, and especially those with staff working on or around heavy equipment in busy facilities or tough conditions. Businesses also face increasing pressure to improve sustainability because fossil fuel emissions have serious implications for public health more broadly, beyond their own workforce and facilities.

CUSTOMER MANDATES FOR SUPPLIERS

To support sustainability commitments and decarbonization goals, many businesses are holding vendors or suppliers to more stringent standards.

  • One major retailer that was among the first to have corporate initiatives centered solely on scope 3 emissions – those from suppliers and vendors – has cut 1 billion tons of emissions years ahead of schedule by engaging suppliers in climate action
  • According to the 2023 MHI annual industry report, 37% of respondents say they are focusing on the support and sustainability of their suppliers to improve the sustainability of their own supply chain
CONSUMER AND INVESTOR FAVORABILITY

Values on social issues such as sustainability are influencing the decisions of consumers and investors.

According to a Kantar Latin America sustainability report:

  • 44% of Latin American consumers stopped buying products due to their impact on the environment
  • 50% expected companies and brands to offset their environmental impact
ELECTRIFICATION INCENTIVES

Some countries and regions around the world, including the United States and the European Union, have grants, incentives, loans and emission cap-and-trade or cap-and-invest programs available to help finance or offset electric equipment costs. Within Latin America, several countries including Argentina, Colombia, Chile and Mexico have implemented carbon pricing instruments in the form of crediting mechanisms, compliance instruments – like emissions trading systems (ETS) and carbon taxes – or both.

Programs and availability vary country to country. Speak with your local dealer to learn more about financial incentives that may be available in your region to help you electrify your forklift fleet.
