Take operational safety to the next level

Forklift safety helps keep operations moving, and helps businesses hit targets on-time and on-budget. However, operations involving lift trucks, may have the potential for incidents, and industrial sites alone account for more than three in ten of all non-fatal workplace accidents.

So how can businesses with industrial materials handling operations tackle safety? A new white paper from Hyster explores how lift truck operations can leverage the most comprehensive forklift safety strategy, and why this is non-negotiable for high-intensity applications.

The free-of-charge Hyster® whitepaper is titled: Three layers of forklift safety: Promoting operating best practices. It looks at how business can take a multi-tier approach to safety, in addition to choosing the training protocols and solutions best suited for the particular application, and its operators.

What are the 3 layers of forklift safety?

There is no one single correct approach to forklift safety. However, particular operations may consider leveraging the benefits of forklift training, telematics, and Operator Assistance Systems to support site safety processes.

  • Forklift Training

Lift truck operator training, comprised of theory and practical elements, is often required for compliance. Forklift training can be tailored to equip operators for the specific needs and challenges associated with unique facilities, workflows, and lift trucks.

  • Telematics Systems

Enabling supervisors to monitor and audit operator performance in real time for more informed training and management decisions, telematics systems can track equipment diagnostics and utilisation to individual operator performance. This information can be accessed in real-time via desktops, laptops and mobile devices, helping sites monitor and address operator behaviour and truck impact events.

  • Operator Assistance Systems

The umbrella term ‘Operator Assistance Systems’ (OAS) encompasses a variety of solutions, from alarms to pedestrian awareness lights. Many Operator Assistance Systems (OAS) for materials handling applications focus on supporting operator and pedestrian awareness. Others will support operators by adjusting and controlling truck movements, including travel speed, lift speed, or reverse speed. Integrated stability control systems are another option that may help minimise certain risks and automatically reinforce safe operating practices.
