In-depth consultancy and the Hyster warehouse simulator helped a leading wholesale and retail company in Czechia to identify the optimal fleet of 31 Hyster trucks. An application-specific solution delivered a low Total Cost of Ownership and supported high productivity.
THE CHALLENGE
Following a period of expansion, the company needed to equip its new warehouse with a comprehensive materials handling fleet. However, it faces challenges such as a need for speed, efficient stacking heights, and cost control. Having worked with its current truck suppliers for 15 years, the company was keen to explore a new solution that could offer enhanced value and efficiency. And, moreover, a supplier that they could turn to for guidance as its operations, number of warehouses, and fleet requirements expand. The company started with a wishlist of a fleet of 40 trucks of different types.
THE SOLUTION
The Hyster and dealer team knew it was vital to gain a better understanding of the specific application before suggesting any solutions.
Hyster used its warehouse simulator to conduct an in-depth analysis of the warehouse pallet flow. With data around number of pallets in and out, timings of operations, picking speed and warehouse layout, the tool can assess different scenarios to identify a range of options that provide optimal productivity.
The simulation showed the customer could make potential fleet size reductions of 20-30% and operate efficiently with a reduced number of trucks than in their original specifications. It highlighted that backup units could be used to navigate demands during peak periods, providing a more agile and cost-effective solution than having a larger permanent fleet.
Seamless collaboration between Hyster, the local dealer, and the customer enabled a focus on value-added and tailored solutions, rather than just price.
THE RESULTS
The customer ordered a fleet of 31 trucks in total, comprising of three Hyster R1.4 reach trucks, 20 LO2.0 low level order pickers, and eight P1.6 pedestrian pallet trucks.
Hyster also delivered a solution which considered ways to keep expenses under control. Such as service flexibility and backup models, providing peak coverage. The new Hyster trucks were also delivered with the Hyster Tracker wireless asset management system, providing the customer with real-time data to help manage and optimise fleet performance, and reduce unnecessary costs and inefficiencies.
The benefits of the Hyster fleet were numerous. The customer reduced initial fleet costs, while gaining operational efficiencies and benefitting from a low Total Cost of Ownership. The robust and user-friendly design of Hyster trucks also enhanced the operator experience, which may help contribute to higher operator productivity.
The co-operation between Hyster and the customer exemplifies the importance of strategic planning, application-led solutions, and effective teamwork.
