To support demanding forklift operations where pedestrians and vehicles work closely together, Pedestrian Detection Cameras are now available on a range of Hyster® counterbalance lift trucks with capacities from 1.5 - 5 tonnes.
When it comes to operating a forklift safely, there are many factors at play and there is no substitute for training and supervision. However, depending on the specific application, operator assistance systems, such as a Pedestrian Awareness Camera, may provide support.
What does the Pedestrian Detection Camera do?
The rear-facing camera is fitted to the Hyster forklift and activates when the lift truck operator selects the reverse function. If the camera detects the shape of a pedestrian, the system alerts the operator of a pedestrian’s presence with both audible and visual notifications. The operator can then respond as needed.
Why use a Pedestrian Awareness Camera?
Workplace injuries are common across the whole of Europe. In the UK alone, accident figures showed that 43% of incidents involving a forklift truck were impacts with a third party. Forklift incidents are not only dangerous, they can also be expensive. Alongside the human cost, there are financial implications around downtime, sick pay, insurance payouts, and fines.
This Pedestrian Detection Camera System may provide assistance to support operator situational awareness, helping applications to implement risk reduction processes. It can prove helpful on busy industrial sites and storage facilities where pedestrians may be working in proximity to lift trucks, either regularly or occasionally.
How does it work?
The forklift camera system is specifically designed to detect pedestrians, rather than other objects or obstacles. It does this by identifying common pedestrian postures. When a pedestrian is detected, it warns operators with yellow lights or red lights, as well as a combination of red lights with a voice prompt (depending on how close the pedestrian is to the truck). The solution has a range of up to 8 metres.
