The scalable design philosophy behind Hyster® A Series forklift trucks means each machine is customisable to meet unique customer’s needs. That includes fuel choice, with the option to use HVO100 (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) to power ICE forklifts.
By configuring the Hyster A Series forklifts to specific application requirements, businesses can expect superior performance, a low total cost of ownership, and a solution that aligns with sustainability goals. For those operations working to reduce their carbon footprint, customising with HVO 100 (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), according to the EN15940 standard, may help reduce carbon emissions significantly compared to other fuel options for internal combustion engine (ICE) forklifts.
What is Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO 100)?
Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) is a paraffinic bio-based liquid fuel originating from many kinds of vegetable oils, such as rapeseed, sunflower, and soybean oil, as well as animal fats. It can be used in conventional diesel engines, pure or blended with fossil diesel (Petro diesel). However, some minor modifications may be required in the fuelling systems due to the ethanol content.
HVO offers up to 90% reduction in CO2 emissions, helping in the transition towards zero-emissions forklift operations. Hyster ICE forklifts powered by HVO fuel offer exceptional durability and consistent power delivery even in the most extreme environments, just like their diesel-powered counterparts.
To provide even more fuel customisation options, the Hyster H2.0-3.5A A Series lift trucks can also use GTL (Gas to Liquid) and BtL (Biomass to Liquid) fuels. These alternatives to diesel may also help reduce CO2 emissions, supporting businesses in lowering their carbon footprint, while selecting both the right fleet and the right power for the application.
Why not choose electric forklifts to reduce emissions?
Tough Hyster electrific forklifts can be used indoors and outdoors and are a great fit for many different types of operations. However, the ideal choice of forklift truck fleet always depends on particular application needs, and an electric lift truck might not always be the right solution for every operation or business.
Even where operations are planning to go electric, they may be other considerations that need addressing before making the switch. For example, the initial cost of implementing an electric fleet must include the infrastructure and charging upgrades that may be required.
In either case, switching to greener fuel types, such as HVO100, may offer a solution to suit some businesses and help them to reduce their carbon footprint while moving towards forklift fleet electrification.
Do I need specialist forklifts to start using HVO?
Many lift trucks are capable of running on Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) with little to no modification. Hyster A Series lift trucks can be delivered ex-factory, readily equipped for use with alternative fuels. Selecting the power source is just one of the many customisation options available when specifying your Hyster A Series forklifts.
This means that, subject to costs and the availability of a sustainable supply chain, HVO100 can be used as a diesel alternative, providing a solution a short or long term solution to support environmental goals. As a second-generation biofuel, HVO100 is reported to eliminate up to 90% of net greenhouse gas emissions (such as CO2) and reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx), particulate matter (PM), and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions.
